Falls Lake State Recreational Area is a collective of seven access areas scattered around the shoreline of this undeveloped, 12,000-acre reservoir. There are five swim beaches in the recreation area and a number of boating ramps, some reserved for paddlers and non-gasoline powered boats. The Beaverdam access offers a network of mountain biking trails as well as a separate and quiet lake impoundment perfect for paddling, fishing and swimming. The Mountains-to-Sea State Trail winds through parts of the recreation area and is a centerpiece of a network of hiking trails.  Holly Point Campground is located in the Falls Lake State Recreation Area.

Nearby is the Neuse River Greenway Trail, 27.5 miles of paved trail with diverse features that you can walk or bike on. The trail offers scenic views of the Neuse River, winding boardwalk areas through wetlands, historical sights, interpretive signs, and agricultural fields. The Neuse River Trail is a segment of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, a long-distance trail that runs across North Carolina from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks.

Also in the Raleigh-Durham-Triangle area, there are several wineries, breweries, and restaurants to explore.
