Nestled in a cozy parking lot in historic Pasadena, you’ll find the Airstream Club’s oldest “Urban Rally”. For over 40 years, Airstreamers have been meeting here to celebrate the iconic Tournament of Roses Parade, which takes place most years on January first. In the early days of the Rose Parade Rally, attendees would sign up for shifts to reserve space on Colorado Blvd for the group to enjoy on parade day! Fortunately, we’ve been able to secure a great section of grandstand seats for over a decade now, so everyone can get some rest the night before the parade.
Pasadena, an enticing city at the base of the San Gabriel mountain range, has something for everyone. World class art museums, galleries, gardens, shopping, restaurants and more make Pasadena a popular destination for travelers. During the few days leading up to the Rose Parade, the city sings with excitement. In fact this year’s recently announced theme is, “Celebrating a World of Music: the Universal Language.”
Every year the RPR attracts Airstreamers from around the country, some people leaving their homes before Christmas to arrive in Pasadena for New Year’s, and the parade on New Year’s Day is just a part of what the Rose Parade Rally is all about. Attendees are welcomed to the rally the first day with lots of information about rally activities, a catered dinner and a chance to get to know each other. The RPR team provides some meals each day for the attendees; it’s such a great chance to get to know each other and share stories. The rally site is conveniently located within walking distance of a variety of eateries and shopping.
While Grandstand seats are included in the rally fee, attendees are invited to purchase tickets to additional Rose Parade Events, preceding the parade. Equestfest is a spectacular horse show that showcases the talented equestrian acts featured in the parade. The Bandfest events feature the amazing marching band field shows for the bands participating in the parade. Tickets may also be purchased for Float Decorating Viewing Places, where you can watch the float construction with a “bird’s eye view.”
Meanwhile, back at the rally site, Airstreamers have plenty of time to socialize, utilizing our large Rally tent with tables and chairs for meals, games and crafts. New Year’s Eve is celebrated at the RPR with a potluck dinner, music and fun. On January 1, the rally culminates in the main event, the Rose Parade. Registration for RPR opens each year in the Spring, and historically sells out quickly.
For parade day, a short walk brings us to our reserved grandstand seats on Colorado Blvd! Some meals are provided, with ample time to explore the many sights and tastes of Pasadena. Arrive with a full water tank and empty holding tanks on December 28. Flush toilets are available. Generator hours are limited. For this event, our parking area is fenced for security and a tent with tables and chairs is available to enjoy meals together. Shopping in the immediate area includes Macy’s, Trader Joes and many small restaurants and shops, all within easy walking distance! This rally is a bucket list item for many Airstream Club Members, often with attendees from around the country! Don’t miss out!
